Surah An-Nasr 110:1-3 - the Prophet's (SAW) mission completed, and why the response was humility, not celebration.
Surah An-Nasr describes the moment the Prophet's (SAW) mission reached its completion, people entering Islam in crowds, and yet the surah's response to that triumph is not celebration alone. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy we find this response worth teaching our students carefully.
Victory From Allah Alone
إِذَا جَآءَ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْفَتْحُ وَرَأَيْتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابًۢا
"When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest, and you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes, then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of Repentance." (Surah An-Nasr 110:1-3)
Even Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), a senior companion, admitted he did not fully grasp the surah's deeper meaning until Ibn Abbas explained it referred to the Prophet's (SAW) approaching departure from this world. The Prophet's (SAW) own reply, when asked about it, was: "I do not know anything about it except what you know." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4970)
Success Answered With Humility
We remind our students that the greatest response to success is not pride, it is glorification and seeking forgiveness. When a student completes a difficult juz or seals a surah, we teach them to respond the way this ayah teaches: with gratitude turned toward Allah (SWT), not self-congratulation.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students success and the humility to meet it rightly. Ameen.
