A reflection on Surah Al-Hadid 57:12-13 - the light that will guide believers on the Day of Judgement, and how it is nurtured in this life.
Every Hifz journey has its dim stretches, evenings where a student's focus fades and the next page feels heavier than it should. Surah Al-Hadid paints a picture worth holding onto during those moments: a light that grows now and shines brightest when it is needed most.
A Light Carried Into the Hereafter
يَوْمَ تَرَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَسْعَىٰ نُورُهُم بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَـٰنِهِم بُشْرَىٰكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ جَنَّـٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ يَوْمَ يَقُولُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱنظُرُونَا نَقْتَبِسْ مِن نُّورِكُمْ قِيلَ ٱرْجِعُوا۟ وَرَآءَكُمْ فَٱلْتَمِسُوا۟ نُورًا فَضُرِبَ بَيْنَهُم بِسُورٍ لَّهُۥ بَابٌۢ بَاطِنُهُۥ فِيهِ ٱلرَّحْمَةُ وَظَـٰهِرُهُۥ مِن قِبَلِهِ ٱلْعَذَابُ
"On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], "Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally." That is what is the great attainment. On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment." (Surah Al-Hadid 57:12-13)
Allah (SWT) describes the Day when believing men and women will have their light moving before them and on their right, a light earned through faith and righteous deeds in this life. The ayah that follows contrasts this with those left in darkness, asking for a portion of that same light too late.
Nurturing the Light Now
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosques in darkness that they will have complete light on the Day of Resurrection." (Sunan Abi Dawud 561) The light of that Day is not given at random. It is built from the small, consistent acts done in this world, prayer, remembrance, honesty, and for our students, the quiet discipline of returning to the Qur'an day after day.
We remind our students that every page memorised with sincerity, every difficult class attended despite tiredness, adds to a light they cannot yet see but will need one Day. May Allah (SWT) grant our students and their families a light that carries them safely on that Day. Ameen.
