A reflection on Surah Al-Hadid 57:16 - Allah's (SWT) gentle rebuke to hearts that have grown distant, and the path back to softness.
Even the most dedicated student can feel their heart grow a little hard, revision becomes mechanical, du'a becomes routine, and the Qur'an's words pass by without settling. Surah Al-Hadid names this exact condition and asks a question that has stayed with believers for centuries.
A Question That Reaches the Heart
۞ أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
"Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allāh and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient." (Surah Al-Hadid 57:16)
"Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah?" Allah (SWT) is not condemning the believer here; He is calling them back, gently, to the softness their heart is capable of.
The Heart Governs Everything Else
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Indeed, there is a piece of flesh in the body. If it is sound, the whole body is sound. If it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart." (Sahih al-Bukhari 52; Sahih Muslim 1599) A hardened heart affects everything, focus in salah, patience with family, sincerity in Hifz. But this ayah is proof that no heart is beyond return; sincere reflection on the Qur'an is itself the remedy it describes.
We encourage our students, when their revision starts to feel routine, to pause and actually listen to the meaning of what they are reciting. May Allah (SWT) soften our hearts and keep them responsive to His remembrance. Ameen.
