A reflection on Surah Al-Hadid 57:10-11 - why spending for Allah's sake is described as a loan He multiplies without limit.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, our families often give quietly, sponsoring a fellow student's fees, contributing toward the school's needs, supporting a du'a for someone struggling. Surah Al-Hadid describes exactly this kind of giving as a trade with no losing side.
Why Would Anyone Hold Back?
وَمَا لَكُمْ أَلَّا تُنفِقُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَٰثُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوِى مِنكُم مَّنْ أَنفَقَ مِن قَبْلِ ٱلْفَتْحِ وَقَـٰتَلَ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدُ وَقَـٰتَلُوا۟ ۚ وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يُقْرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَـٰعِفَهُۥ لَهُۥ وَلَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ
"And why do you not spend in the cause of Allāh while to Allāh belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth? Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did so after it]. Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allāh has promised the best [reward]. And Allāh, of what you do, is Aware. Who is it that would loan Allāh a goodly loan so He will multiply it for him and he will have a noble reward?" (Surah Al-Hadid 57:10-11)
Allah (SWT) asks why believers would withhold from spending in His cause when the inheritance of the heavens and earth already belongs to Him. He then describes giving as a goodly loan that He multiplies many times over, with a generous reward besides.
Nothing Given for Allah Is Wasted
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives another except that Allah increases him in honour. And no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him in status." (Sahih Muslim 2588) Giving, in this light, is never a loss; it is an investment that only grows.
We see this trust reflected in the families who continue to support DSQA and one another, believing that what leaves their hand for Allah's sake never truly leaves their account with Him. May Allah (SWT) multiply every act of generosity shown for His sake and grant its givers honour in both worlds. Ameen.
