Play, Amusement, and What Truly Lasts: Surah Al-Hadid on This Worldly Life

19 October 2026

A reflection on Surah Al-Hadid 57:20 - the Qur'an's vivid picture of worldly life and why lasting reward lies elsewhere.

Balancing schoolwork, Hifz, and the pull of everyday distractions is one of the hardest things we ask of our students. Surah Al-Hadid gives one of the Qur'an's most memorable descriptions of exactly this tension.

A Life That Rises, Then Fades

"Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allāh and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion." (Surah Al-Hadid 57:20)

Allah (SWT) describes worldly life as play, amusement, adornment, boasting, and competition in wealth and children, likened to rain that produces pleasing growth, which then withers and turns to straw. The ayah closes by turning attention to what actually endures: severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure from Allah, and reminds us that this worldly life is only the enjoyment of delusion.

Keeping the Right Thing First

The Prophet (SAW) said: "The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever." (Sahih Muslim 2956) This does not mean worldly life has no value; it means the believer holds it loosely, using it without being consumed by it.

We try to teach our students this balance directly: enjoy what Allah (SWT) has given lawfully, but never let it eclipse the Hifz, the salah, or the character that will actually matter on the Day all of this fades. May Allah (SWT) protect our students' hearts from being captured by what does not last. Ameen.
