A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:22 - the image of two very different ways of walking through life.
Surah Al-Mulk uses a simple, vivid image to compare two ways of living: one upright and guided, the other stumbling and lost. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we find this comparison a helpful way to speak with students about the choices that shape a life.
Two Ways of Walking
أَفَمَن يَمْشِى مُكِبًّا عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِۦٓ أَهْدَىٰٓ أَمَّن يَمْشِى سَوِيًّا عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ ٢٢
"Then is one who walks fallen on his face better guided or one who walks erect on a straight path?" (Surah Al-Mulk 67:22)
One person moves face-down, stumbling and unable to see where they are going. The other walks upright, on level ground, able to see the road clearly. The Qur'an does not need to state which is better guided; the image makes it obvious.
Choosing the Straight Path
This is a picture of guidance versus heedlessness. A life without clear direction, without the guidance of revelation, moves blindly, vulnerable to every stumble. A life anchored in Allah's (SWT) guidance moves with clarity, even through difficulty.
We hope every student who passes through DSQA carries this image with them: that the discipline of learning the Qur'an is itself a way of choosing to walk upright, on a clear path, rather than face-down and uncertain.
May Allah (SWT) keep our students firmly upon the straight path, and may He never let their feet stumble from His guidance. Ameen.
