A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:23 - the gifts we use every day without pausing to thank the One who gave them.
Some blessings are so constant that we stop noticing them. Surah Al-Mulk names three of the most fundamental ones directly, and then asks a pointed question about our response to them. It is a question worth sitting with at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, where learning itself depends entirely on these same gifts.
Three Gifts Named
قُلْ هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَكُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۖ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ ٢٣
"Say, 'It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful.'" (Surah Al-Mulk 67:23)
Hearing, sight, and the intellect of the heart, these are the very faculties a student uses to listen to a teacher, read the mus-haf, and understand what is being memorised. Allah (SWT) names them specifically, and then observes plainly that gratitude for them is rare.
Gratitude for the Tools of Learning
It is tempting to feel gratitude only for dramatic blessings, and to overlook the quiet, constant ones that make everything else possible. Without hearing, sight, and understanding, no Hifz journey could even begin.
We try to remind our students that the very ability to sit and memorise the Qur'an is itself one of the blessings this ayah names, and deserves the same gratitude as anything more visible.
May Allah (SWT) make our students among the few who are truly grateful for their hearing, their sight, and their hearts, and may He use those gifts to draw them nearer to Him. Ameen.
