A reflection on Surah As-Sajdah 32:15-16 - how the surah describes true believers not by what they know, but by how they respond.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we care as much about how our students respond to what they learn as about how much they memorise. Surah As-Sajdah describes sincere faith the very same way.
A Response, Not Just Knowledge
Allah (SWT) does not describe the believers here by their intelligence or status, but by their reaction to revelation:
إِنَّمَا يُؤْمِنُ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهَا خَرُّوا۟ سُجَّدًا وَسَبَّحُوا۟ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ ۩
"Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:15)
The forehead reaching the ground is the outward expression of an inward reality, this is why the surah is named As-Sajdah, the prostration. Pride, the surah reminds us, has always been one of the greatest barriers to guidance.
Rising When Others Sleep
The passage then moves from public worship to private devotion:
تَتَجَافَىٰ جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ ٱلْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
"Their sides part [i.e., they arise] from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:16)
Scholars explain this describes voluntary night worship, rising when most people are asleep, calling on Allah (SWT) with both hope and fear held together. The Prophet (SAW) said: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is while he is in prostration, so increase your supplication." (Sahih Muslim 482)
Faith That Shows in Response
We hope our students learn that the strongest proof of faith is not what they can recite from memory, but how that knowledge changes their worship, humility, and generosity. A heart truly affected by the Qur'an looks different from one that merely knows it.
May Allah (SWT) make our students among those whose hearts respond to His words with humility and sincere worship. Ameen.
