The Meeting You Cannot Avoid: Surah As-Sajdah on Death and Return

We speak with our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy about many things they hope for in this life, exams passed, surahs sealed, futures built. Surah As-Sajdah asks a different, more searching question about the one appointment none of us can avoid.

The Real Issue Beneath the Question

Those who denied resurrection asked whether they would truly be recreated after returning to dust. Allah (SWT) reveals what was really behind the question:

وَقَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا ضَلَلْنَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَءِنَّا لَفِى خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍۭ ۚ بَلْ هُم بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّهِمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
"And they say, "When we are lost [i.e., disintegrated] within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?" Rather, they are, in the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:10)

Their real difficulty was not a lack of evidence, it was denial of the meeting with Allah (SWT) itself and everything that follows it.

A Certainty, Not a Possibility

The surah then states plainly what awaits every soul:

۞ قُلْ يَتَوَفَّىٰكُم مَّلَكُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ٱلَّذِى وُكِّلَ بِكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ
"Say, "The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."" (Surah As-Sajdah 32:11)

Death is not presented as one possible outcome among many. It is certain, for every person, at an appointed time no one can delay. The Prophet (SAW) said: "The intelligent one is the one who subdues his soul and works for what comes after death." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2459)

Living With the Meeting in Mind

We hope this awareness shapes how our students approach their studies and their character, not with fear that paralyses, but with clarity about what matters most. A life lived with this meeting in view has different priorities than one lived without it.

May Allah (SWT) prepare our students and their families well for the meeting that awaits every one of us, and grant them a good return to Him. Ameen.
