A reflection on Surah As-Sajdah 32:7-9 - how remembering our humble origin and Allah's honour toward us protects against both pride and despair.
Every student who walks into Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy carries two truths at once, they came from very little, and Allah (SWT) has honoured them with the ability to carry His Book. Surah As-Sajdah holds both of these truths together beautifully.
A Humble Beginning
The surah reminds us of our origin in unmistakable terms:
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ۖ وَبَدَأَ خَلْقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ مِن طِينٍ
"Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:7)
ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُۥ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ
"Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:8)
No matter how capable or accomplished a person becomes, their beginning remains the same. This reminder guards the heart against arrogance.
Then Comes the Honour
The passage does not stop at humility. It continues:
ثُمَّ سَوَّىٰهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِۦ ۖ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ
"Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:9)
Hearing, sight, and intellect are not simply abilities, they are trusts through which we receive revelation, observe Allah's signs, and recognise the truth. The verse ends with a gentle rebuke that we so rarely give thanks for them.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "O Allah, You have made my outward form beautiful; make my character beautiful as well." (Sahih Ibn Hibban 959) - a du'a that holds together the same humility and dignity this passage describes.
Holding Humility and Dignity Together
We want our students to remember both realities: where they came from, and how Allah (SWT) has honoured them. Humility without self-contempt, and dignity without arrogance, this is the balance the Qur'an teaches.
May Allah (SWT) keep our students humble in their origin and grateful for the honour He has given them. Ameen.
