A reflection on Surah As-Sajdah 32:1-3 - how the surah opens by acknowledging the limits of human knowledge before speaking of revelation.

Letters Whose Meaning Belongs to Allah Alone
The surah opens with three disconnected letters, Alif-Lam-Meem, whose full meaning scholars agree is known only to Allah (SWT):
الٓمٓ
"Alif, Lām, Meem." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:1)
Before speaking of certainty or creation, the surah begins by acknowledging that human knowledge is limited. Then comes the declaration of the Qur'an's source:
تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ مِن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"[This is] the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds." (Surah As-Sajdah 32:2)
A Heart That Submits, Not One That Judges
Rather than accepting this, some responded by claiming the Prophet (SAW) had invented it himself. The Qur'an's response is clear: guidance is not only a matter of evidence, it also depends on the condition of the heart. A humble heart becomes receptive; a resistant one struggles even when the signs are plain.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "No one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him." (Sahih Muslim 2588) This is why the surah is named As-Sajdah, the prostration, true knowledge of Allah (SWT) does not stop at the mind, it reaches the heart and produces worship.
Beginning Every Lesson With Humility
We try to instil this same posture in our students before they even begin their daily portion: approach the Qur'an ready to submit to what it teaches, not to stand above it and judge it by your own habits or assumptions.
May Allah (SWT) make the hearts of our students receptive to His words, and raise them through the humility they show before Him. Ameen.
