A reflection closing our short series on Surah Ar-Rahman - how its repeated refrain trains the heart to answer with gratitude rather than denial.
Surah Ar-Rahman repeats one question more than thirty times across its verses, and it is worth pausing on that repetition with our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy as we close this short reflection on the surah.
A Question That Follows Every Blessing
After describing gardens of extraordinary beauty, the surah asks once more:
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
"So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:63)
By this point the question has followed the Quran, creation, balance, provision, oceans, ships, judgment, Hell, and Paradise. The repetition is deliberate, training the heart to see every blessing, warning, and reward as evidence of Ar-Rahman's mercy.
Praise as the Final Word
The surah closes with a single line that gathers everything before it:
تَبَـٰرَكَ ٱسْمُ رَبِّكَ ذِى ٱلْجَلَـٰلِ وَٱلْإِكْرَامِ
"Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor." (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:78)
The Prophet (SAW) once recited this surah to his Companions, who remained silent. He told them the jinn had responded better, saying each time: "None of Your favors do we deny, our Lord. To You belongs all praise." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3291)
Making Gratitude Personal
Gratitude, this surah teaches, is not only a feeling. It is recognising the One who gave every blessing in the first place, the Qur'an our students memorise, the ability to learn it, the family that supports them.
May Allah (SWT), Ar-Rahman, accept our gratitude, and may our students never deny a single one of His favours upon them. Ameen.
