A reflection on Surah Ar-Rahman 55:46-60 - the reward promised to whoever stands in awe of meeting their Lord.
Long stretches of Hifz revision rarely feel rewarding in the moment. Surah Ar-Rahman speaks directly to students and families at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy who wonder whether quiet, unseen effort is truly worth it.
A Reward for a Quality of Heart
The passage opens not with an achievement, but with a feeling: awe before standing one day in front of Allah (SWT).
وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ
"But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens -" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:46)
This fear is not despair. It is reverence, an awareness that restrains sin and motivates obedience. What follows is a description of gardens, flowing springs, abundant fruit, comfort with nothing deficient or delayed.
Goodness Answered With Goodness
The passage reaches one of the most beautiful lines in the Qur'an:
هَلْ جَزَآءُ ٱلْإِحْسَـٰنِ إِلَّا ٱلْإِحْسَـٰنُ
"Is the reward for good [anything] but good?" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:60)
Nothing sincere, this ayah promises, is ever lost with Allah (SWT). The Prophet (SAW) relayed that Allah (SWT) says: "I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never crossed the heart of any human being." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3244; Sahih Muslim 2824)
Small Sacrifices, Not Forgotten
A student who lowers their gaze, holds back an unkind word, or gives up free time for revision may feel their sacrifice goes unnoticed. This ayah is the answer: Allah (SWT) sees every one of those small sacrifices, and rewards goodness with goodness far beyond the effort given.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students the awe of standing before Him that this ayah describes, and reward every quiet sacrifice they make for His sake. Ameen.
