A reflection on Surah Ar-Rahman 55:37-44 - why Allah's warnings about the Hereafter are counted among His favours, not apart from them.
Correcting a student, whether in recitation or conduct, is never comfortable, but at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy we hold onto the principle that a timely correction is a form of care, not harshness. Surah Ar-Rahman applies that same principle to Allah's warnings about the Hereafter.
A Sky That Will Not Stay as It Is
After chapters of creation and blessing, the surah turns toward judgment:
فَإِذَا ٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَٱلدِّهَانِ
"And when the heaven is split open and becomes rose-colored like oil -" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:37)
What looks permanent today, even the sky itself, will be transformed by Allah's command. The surah then describes the fate of those who denied the truth, and continues its refrain even here:
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
"So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:40)
Why a Warning Counts as a Favour
It may seem strange that this question of gratitude follows straight after a description of punishment. Yet being warned before reaching danger is itself a mercy. Allah (SWT) sends messengers, reveals scripture, and repeats warnings precisely so people can turn back before the Day arrives.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6486) His words were never meant to paralyse the believer with fear, but to awaken sincere preparation.
Correction as Care, Not Cruelty
We hope our students learn to receive correction the way this ayah frames a divine warning, not as an attack, but as someone caring enough to tell them the truth before it costs them more. The same is true of every reminder the Qur'an gives us about the Hereafter.
May Allah (SWT) make us grateful for every warning that turns us back toward Him, rather than resentful of it. Ameen.
