A reflection on Surah Ibrahim 14:37 - Hajar's trust when left alone in the desert, and the origin of the sa'i still walked today.
Trust in Allah (SWT) is easiest to describe and hardest to live. The story of Hajar, left in a barren valley with her infant son on Allah's command, shows us both, and it is a story we return to with our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy whenever obedience feels difficult to understand.
"Did Allah Command You to Do This?"
رَّبَّنَآ إِنِّىٓ أَسْكَنتُ مِن ذُرِّيَّتِى بِوَادٍ غَيْرِ ذِى زَرْعٍ عِندَ بَيْتِكَ ٱلْمُحَرَّمِ رَبَّنَا لِيُقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَٱجْعَلْ أَفْـِٔدَةً مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ تَهْوِىٓ إِلَيْهِمْ وَٱرْزُقْهُم مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْكُرُونَ
"Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful." (Ibrahim 14:37)
Ibrahim (AS) left his wife Hajar and their son Isma'il (AS) in an empty valley with barely any provisions, then prayed: "Our Lord, I have settled my family in this barren valley... so that they may establish prayer." He asked not for comfort or wealth, but for a lineage of worshippers.
When Hajar asked whether this was Allah's command and Ibrahim (AS) confirmed it was, her response carried the weight of complete trust: "Then He will not abandon us."
Obedience That Rewrites Destiny
That same valley became the heart of the Muslim world. Hajar's search for water became the sa'i every pilgrim still walks between Safa and Marwa. Her son's cry gave rise to the well of Zamzam. As the Prophet (SAW) described in a longer hadith, "This is the origin of the tradition of the sa'i." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3364)
What This Teaches Our Families
Sometimes Allah (SWT) withholds from our hands so that He may give in greater ways later. A "barren valley" moment, difficulty with no visible way forward, is not necessarily abandonment. Hajar's certainty is the model we want our students to carry into their own hard seasons.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students and their families the same trust Hajar showed, and may He never abandon those who place themselves fully in His care. Ameen.
