A reflection on Surah Al-Anbiya 21:68-70 - Ibrahim's (AS) trust as he was thrown into the fire, and what tawakkul looks like at its most tested.
Few stories in the Qur'an capture complete trust in Allah (SWT) as vividly as Ibrahim (AS) facing the fire. We share it with our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy as the clearest picture of what it means to hold faith when fear is at its highest.
Thrown Into the Flames
قُلْنَا يَـٰنَارُ كُونِى بَرْدًا وَسَلَـٰمًا عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
"We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."" (Al-Anbya 21:69)
After Ibrahim (AS) shattered the idols his people worshipped, their response was rage, not reflection. They built a fire large enough to swallow a city and cast him into it. In that moment, he said, "Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563)
Allah (SWT) responded: "O fire, be cool and safe for Ibrahim." The very threat meant to destroy him became, by Allah's command, a place of safety.
Safety Is Not About Circumstances
Ibrahim (AS) stood in fire and was not burned. Many people stand in complete comfort, yet their hearts burn with anxiety. This story teaches that safety comes from surrender to Allah (SWT), not from the absence of danger.
What We Ask Our Students to Carry
When a student faces a fear, an exam, a difficult page, a hard conversation, we remind them of this: "Hasbunallahu wa ni'ma-l-wakil" (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs) is not just a phrase to memorise; it is a heart posture Ibrahim (AS) lived out completely.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students the same trust Ibrahim (AS) carried into the fire, and may He make every difficulty they face a means of ease. Ameen.
