A reflection on Surah As-Saffat 37:102-105 - the sacrifice Ibrahim (AS) was asked to make, and what it teaches about surrendering what we love most.
Every year, the story behind Eid al-Adha is retold, but its deeper lesson deserves more than a yearly mention. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we want our students to understand what Ibrahim (AS) and Isma'il (AS) were truly being tested with.
A Command Received With Gentleness
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعْىَ قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
"And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."" (As-Saffat 37:102)
وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ أَن يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"We called to him, "O Abraham, You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good." (As-Saffat 37:104-105)
At the very moment obedience reached its peak, Allah (SWT) called out that the vision had already been fulfilled. Allah (SWT) never wanted the blood; He wanted the heart.
What We Are Really Asked to Surrender
Few of us will ever be asked to lay down what Ibrahim (AS) was asked to lay down. But every believer has attachments that compete with devotion to Allah (SWT): ego, comfort, pride, a habit we know we should release. This story asks us to examine those honestly.
The Prophet (SAW) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." (Sahih Muslim 1631)
A Living Lesson for Our Students
We want our students to understand Eid al-Adha not only as a celebration but as an annual reminder: whatever is given up for Allah's sake is never truly lost.
May Allah (SWT) accept the sacrifices, small and large, that our students and their families make for His sake. Ameen.
