Surah An-Nasr 110:3 - why the Prophet's (SAW) response to success was praise and forgiveness-seeking, not pride.
Surah An-Nasr's final instruction arrives at the height of the Prophet's (SAW) success, and it is not a call to celebrate. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy we teach our students that this ayah is one of the clearest lessons in the Qur'an on how a believer should respond to achievement.
Glorify, Then Seek Forgiveness
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابًۢا
"Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of Repentance." (Surah An-Nasr 110:3)
Even at the peak of success, the instruction is to glorify Allah (SWT) and seek His forgiveness, not to bask in accomplishment. Elsewhere Allah (SWT) commands: "So glorify the praises of your Lord and be among those who prostrate." (Surah Al-Hijr 15:98)
How We Try to Model This
When a student completes their Hifz, or seals a surah after months of effort, we encourage them to mark the moment with gratitude and istighfar rather than pride alone. Success, this ayah teaches, should deepen a person's awareness of their need for Allah (SWT), not lessen it.
May Allah (SWT) accept our students' efforts and keep their hearts humble at every success. Ameen.
