A reflection on Surah Ash-Sharh 94:5-6 - why Allah (SWT) repeats the promise that with hardship comes ease, twice, in successive ayat.
One of the most quoted ayat by our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, often written on the inside cover of a mus'haf or repeated during a hard week, comes from the middle of Surah Ash-Sharh. It is repeated for a reason.
Ease, Named Twice
Allah (SWT) says:
فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ٥ إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ٦
"For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease." (Surah Ash-Sharh 94:5-6)
Many scholars note that while the wording repeats, the second ayah uses a definite article for hardship, "the hardship", while ease remains indefinite both times. This suggests that a single hardship can be met with more than one form of ease. The repetition itself is a deliberate emphasis: this is not a passing comfort, it is a guarantee stated twice for certainty.
Victory Comes Through Patience
The Prophet (SAW) said: "...Know that there is much good in being patient with what you dislike. Victory comes with patience, relief comes with hardship, and with hardship comes ease." (40 Hadith an-Nawawi, 19) Ease is not described as arriving after hardship ends, but as accompanying it, present even while the difficulty continues.
We remind our students facing a difficult stretch in their memorisation that this ayah is not a distant promise for later, ease is already present within the hardship itself, if they look for it with patience.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students ease alongside every hardship they face, exactly as He has promised, twice. Ameen.
