A reflection on Surah Ash-Sharh 94:4 - how Allah (SWT) raised the Prophet's (SAW) name high, and what it teaches about humility and honour.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to teach our students that lasting honour is not something a person builds for themselves, it is something Allah (SWT) grants. Surah Ash-Sharh gives the clearest example of this in the entire Qur'an.
A Name Raised by Allah (SWT), Not by Effort Alone
Allah (SWT) says:
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ ٤
"And raised high for you your repute." (Surah Ash-Sharh 94:4)
The Prophet's (SAW) name is mentioned in the adhan, five times a day, in every corner of the earth, alongside the name of Allah (SWT) Himself. This is not something the Prophet (SAW) arranged; it is something Allah (SWT) granted, following directly after the humility of his earlier years and the burdens described in the previous ayat.
Elevation Follows Humility
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will elevate him." (Sahih Muslim 2588) The order in the surah is telling: Allah (SWT) first expanded the chest, then removed the burden, and only then raised the name. Honour, in this pattern, follows humility and hardship carried well, not the pursuit of recognition itself.
We remind our students that a name known and respected among people is not chased directly, it is something Allah (SWT) grants to those who remain humble and sincere through the harder stages first.
May Allah (SWT) raise our students in honour before Him, and grant them the humility that precedes it. Ameen.
