A reflection on Surah Ar-Rahman 55:1-4 - why Allah (SWT) names teaching the Qur'an before mentioning the creation of humanity itself.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we sometimes remind parents that memorising the Qur'an is not simply an academic milestone, it is receiving what Allah (SWT) Himself lists as His first gift to humanity. Surah Ar-Rahman opens by making that order explicit.
A Blessing Named Before Creation Itself
Before mentioning the sun, the earth, or any of the countless blessings the surah goes on to describe, Allah (SWT) begins with His Name Ar-Rahman, and then with what that mercy first gave:
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ
"The Most Merciful" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:1)
عَلَّمَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ
"Taught the Qur’ān," (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:2)
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
"Created man," (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:3)
Scholars note the striking sequence: teaching the Qur'an is mentioned before the creation of humanity. Guidance is named as a gift so central that it comes even before the being it was revealed for.
Without Guidance, Life Without Direction
The surah then adds a third gift, bayan, clear speech, the ability to express and understand. Through it people learn, teach, and call one another to Allah's guidance. Together, these three verses map a sequence: Allah (SWT) teaches, Allah (SWT) creates, Allah (SWT) equips. Every ability a person has begins with Him.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027) - placing exactly what we do each day at DSQA among the most honoured of pursuits.
Where the Qur'an Sits in Our Priorities
If Allah (SWT) placed the Qur'an first, ahead of every other blessing, it is worth asking where it sits in our own priorities, and in the daily rhythm of our students' lives. A page of revision is never a small thing.
May Allah (SWT) make the Qur'an the spring of our students' hearts and a light that guides every stage of their lives. Ameen.
