A reflection on Surah Ar-Rahman 55:5-9 - how the same order Allah (SWT) placed in the heavens is commanded in our daily dealings.
We try to teach our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy that worship and character are never two separate subjects. Surah Ar-Rahman makes that connection explicit, moving in a single breath from the movement of the sun and moon to how we should weigh a scale.
Order in the Heavens, Order on Earth
Allah (SWT) begins with the precision of creation:
ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ
"The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation," (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:5)
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ
"And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:7)
The word mizan, balance, carries the sense of measure and justice together. Having described the order Allah (SWT) set in the heavens, the surah moves immediately to a command:
أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْمِيزَانِ
"That you not transgress within the balance." (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:8)
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلْوَزْنَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا۟ ٱلْمِيزَانَ
"And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance." (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:9)
Justice Is Not Separate From Faith
The Lord who set the sun and moon on precise courses also commands fairness in how we trade, judge, and treat one another. Honesty in small dealings is not a lesser matter than worship, it flows from the same balance Allah (SWT) placed in creation. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Allah has prescribed excellence (ihsan) in all things." (Sahih Muslim 1955)
Teaching Balance in Small Things
We hope our students carry this into ordinary moments, being fair in a disagreement with a sibling, fulfilling a promise they may have forgotten, speaking truthfully when a shortcut would be easier. Gratitude to Allah (SWT), this ayah teaches, includes living with honesty and fairness toward His creation.
May Allah (SWT) help our students and their families uphold the balance He has placed in their lives, in worship and in every dealing with others. Ameen.
