So Glorify the Name of Your Lord: Facing Death with Certainty in Surah Al-Waqi'ah

Surah Al-Waqi'ah ends where every life eventually does, and it is worth sitting with that ending honestly with our students, not to frighten them, but to help them live with clearer priorities.

A Moment No One Can Delay

The surah describes the instant the soul reaches the throat, when everyone nearby, family, doctors, loved ones, can do nothing to change what Allah (SWT) has decreed:

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
"And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:85)

Scholars explain this nearness as referring to Allah's angels, present at that moment though unseen. The verses then challenge anyone who doubts their own limits: if human beings truly held ultimate control, they would be able to call the soul back. No one ever has.

Three Outcomes, One Certainty

The surah closes by returning to the same three groups it opened with, those brought near, the people of the right, and the deniers, each met differently at that moment. Then comes the surah's final declaration and command:

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
"Indeed, this is the true certainty," (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:95)

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
"So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great." (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:96)

The Prophet (SAW) told his Companions: "Angels come to the dying person. If he was righteous, they say: 'Come out, O good soul that was in a good body. Come out praiseworthy and receive glad tidings of mercy and fragrance...'" (Sunan Ibn Majah 4262)

Living With the Ending in View

We do not want our students to fear death; we want them to be prepared for it, through consistent worship, sincere repentance, and remembrance of Allah (SWT) long before that moment arrives. A Hifz journey lived with this awareness carries a different weight than one lived without it.

May Allah (SWT) make our final moments, and those of our students and their families, moments of glad tidings, mercy, and peace. Ameen.
