A reflection on Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:77-82 - the Qur'an's protected, divine origin, and the question of how seriously we treat it.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we spend years helping students hold the Qur'an in their hearts word by word. Surah Al-Waqi'ah pauses, near its end, to remind every reader exactly what it is they are holding.
A Tremendous Oath, A Noble Book
After pointing to the signs in creation, the surah turns to the greatest sign of all, the Qur'an itself, introduced with an oath Allah (SWT) Himself calls immense:
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ
"Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān." (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:77)
فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ
"In a Register well-protected;." (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:78)
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds." (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:80)
The Qur'an is not the product of any human mind. It is revelation, preserved and protected, sent from the Lord of all worlds. Its guidance does not age or shift with culture.
A Question Every Reader Must Answer
The passage then turns the mirror on the reader directly:
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
"Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:81)
This question is not rhetorical for us either. Do we approach the Qur'an with the attention its source deserves, or does familiarity make us casual with it? The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will receive a good deed, and each good deed is multiplied by ten." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2910)
What This Means in Our Classrooms
We hope our students never let repetition dull their reverence. Every page revised is not simply memory work, it is contact with the literal speech of Allah (SWT), preserved exactly as it was revealed. That is worth remembering on the difficult days of Hifz as much as the easy ones.
May Allah (SWT) make the Qur'an a source of light in the hearts of our students, and never let its familiarity dull their reverence for it. Ameen.
