A reflection on Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:57-70 - how Allah (SWT) points to ordinary things, our own creation, food, water, as proof of His power.
We often tell our students that reflection does not require travelling anywhere special - it can happen over a glass of water or a plate of food. Surah Al-Waqi'ah makes exactly that argument, pointing not to distant wonders but to the things we touch every single day.
Signs Close Enough to Touch
Allah (SWT) begins with our own origin:
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ
"Have you seen that which you emit?" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:58)
ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ
"Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:59)
No one chose their own beginning. From there, the surah turns to the seed that becomes a crop, then to water sent down from the clouds:
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ
"And have you seen the water that you drink?" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:68)
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ
"Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:69)
Each question is rhetorical, and each answer is obvious: we did none of it ourselves. Growth, water, and fire, three things we depend on daily and rarely think twice about, are all entirely outside our control.
From Noticing to Gratitude
The point of these ayat is not simply information. It is to interrupt the habit of taking daily provision for granted. Allah (SWT) reminds us that He could just as easily have made water "intensely salty, bitter, and unusable" - and did not.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "There is none among you except that his place in Paradise or Hell has been written... Act, for everyone will be facilitated toward that for which he was created." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4949; Sahih Muslim 2647) Noticing Allah's provision is itself a small act that shapes the heart toward gratitude and action.
Teaching Students to Notice
Part of what we hope our students carry from their Qur'an studies is exactly this habit: to see a meal, a glass of water, or their own existence as evidence rather than as background. Reflection like this does not require leaving the classroom.
May Allah (SWT) open our eyes to the signs already in front of us, and make gratitude our first response to them. Ameen.
