A reflection on Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:45-46 - how comfort, unchecked, can quietly become a trial rather than a blessing.
One of the things we watch for in our own students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy is not laziness born of hardship, but heedlessness born of comfort - the student who has every advantage and, precisely because of it, stops striving. Surah Al-Waqi'ah's description of the "people of the left" is a sober warning about exactly this.
A Comfort That Turned Into Heedlessness
After describing the reward of the people of the right, the surah turns to the fate of those who denied the Hereafter, and names the root of their downfall plainly:
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
"Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence," (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:45)
وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
"And they used to persist in the great violation," (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:46)
Their condition did not begin with the punishment described in these ayat. It began earlier, with ease that was never met with gratitude, and with persistence in wrongdoing that was never interrupted by repentance.
Comfort Is a Trial, Not Only a Blessing
This is a difficult but necessary lesson: wealth, status, and ease are blessings only when they increase gratitude. Left unchecked, they can just as easily lead to arrogance and forgetfulness of Allah (SWT). The people of the left did not arrive at their end suddenly - their condition built up gradually, through choices repeated over time.
The Prophet (SAW) warned starkly of the punishment awaiting even the least severely punished among the people of the Fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 6562; Sahih Muslim 213) - a reminder that no comfort in this life is worth trading for heedlessness in the next.
Guarding the Heart Against Ease
We try to teach our students that every advantage they are given, ability, opportunity, a stable home, comes with a responsibility to remain grateful and obedient, not complacent. The believer's response to comfort should be humility, not forgetfulness.
May Allah (SWT) protect our students and their families from the heedlessness that comfort can bring, and keep their hearts grateful in ease as much as in hardship. Ameen.
