A reflection on Surah Al-Isra 17:23 and the Prophetic teaching that Jannah lies through the door of one's parents.
Few relationships are described in the Qur'an with as much tenderness as the bond between a child and their parents. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we try to remind our students that honouring this bond is not an old-fashioned courtesy. It is a direct path to Allah's (SWT) pleasure.
Not Even a Word of Complaint
Allah (SWT) says:
وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـٰنًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ ٱلْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَآ أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَآ أُفٍّ
"And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them so much as 'uff'..." (Surah Al-Isra 17:23)
Allah (SWT) does not merely ask for obedience. He forbids even the smallest sigh of irritation toward a parent.
A Door That Stays Open
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers." (Sunan an-Nasa'i 3104) and "The father is the middle gate of Paradise." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1900) Kindness to parents is gentleness in speech, patience in disagreement, and gratitude even when they do not fully understand us.
A Du'a for Every Student
We teach our students the du'a Allah (SWT) Himself places in the Qur'an for parents:
رَبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًا
"My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small." (Surah Al-Isra 17:24)
May Allah (SWT) keep this door of Jannah open for every one of our students, through their kindness to those who raised them. Ameen.
