A reflection on Surah An-Nisa 4:36 - how Allah (SWT) places kindness to family immediately after the command to worship Him alone.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we remind our students often that character does not stay behind at the school gate. It is tested most at home, with the people who see us when we are tired, unguarded, and ordinary. The Qur'an places family right at the centre of what worship actually means.
Family, Placed Beside Tawheed
Allah (SWT) says:
وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَيْـًٔا ۖ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـٰنًا وَبِذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ
"Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives..." (Surah An-Nisa 4:36)
Kindness to parents and relatives is named in the same breath as the command to worship Allah (SWT) alone. This is not incidental. Our treatment of family reflects the sincerity of our devotion to the One who placed them in our lives.
Worship in the Small Moments
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best of you to my family." (Sunan Ibn Majah 1977) A smile toward a parent, patience with a sibling, help offered quietly without being asked, these are not small courtesies. They are acts of worship that carry real weight before Allah (SWT).
It is easy to be courteous to strangers. Only the people at home see who we truly are.
What We Try to Teach
We encourage our students to see their conduct at home as part of their Deen, not separate from it. A student who guards their tongue with a sibling the way they guard their tajweed in class is living exactly what this ayah teaches.
May Allah (SWT) make our students among those whose worship is visible first in their own homes. Ameen.
