A reflection on Surah Ar-Rum 30:21 and how tranquility in the home is preserved through mercy, not left to chance.
At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, we speak to our older students and their families about character that extends into every future relationship, including the home they will one day build themselves. The Qur'an describes marriage not as a contract of convenience, but as a sign of Allah's (SWT) mercy.
Placed, Not Manufactured
Allah (SWT) says:
وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً
"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy." (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21)
Allah (SWT) does not command spouses to generate affection from nothing. He tells us He has already placed it there. What remains is to preserve it, especially when tiredness or irritation threatens to cover it over.
Mercy, Not Loudness
Aisha (RA) said of the Prophet (SAW): "He used to be in the service of his family." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6039) He mended his own clothes, helped without being asked, and never raised his voice in anger at home. He also said: "Whoever does not show mercy to the young or respect to the old is not one of us." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1919)
A home filled with mercy teaches children, long before any lesson does, that faith is patient rather than forced.
Small Acts, Lasting Peace
We encourage our families to practise this deliberately: a word of praise, an unexpected kindness, a moment of patience chosen over a sharp reply. These quiet choices, repeated daily, are what actually build sakinah in a home.
May Allah (SWT) place lasting affection and mercy in the homes of our students and their families. Ameen.
