A reflection on how the Qur'an pairs Allah's (SWT) Might (al-Aziz) with His Wisdom (al-Hakim), and what that pairing teaches about trusting difficult verses.
Some ayat in the Qur'an are easier to sit with than others. Our students sometimes ask why a certain verse commands something they don't yet fully understand. The pairing of two of Allah's Names offers a helpful answer.
Might Anchored in Wisdom
فَإِن زَلَلْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْكُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
"But if you slip [i.e., deviate] after clear proofs have come to you, then know that Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:209)
Allah (SWT) warns believers against slipping back after clear proofs have come to them, reminding them that He is Exalted in Might and Wise. Al-'Aziz, the All-Mighty, and al-Hakim, the All-Wise, appear together wherever divine authority or consequence is affirmed, teaching that Allah's power is never arbitrary; it is always exercised with purpose.
Trusting What We Do Not Yet Grasp
Some commands in the Qur'an may take a believer outside their comfort. This pairing speaks directly to that struggle: we may not grasp the full wisdom behind every ayah, but we are reminded of Whose words they are. Submission deepens when the heart trusts Allah's wisdom without demanding every reason be visible.
We try to model this same trust for our students when a ruling or verse feels difficult at first. May Allah (SWT) increase our students' trust in His wisdom, even in what they do not yet fully understand. Ameen.
