A reflection on Surah Al-Hashr 59:22-24 - why studying Allah's Most Beautiful Names should reshape worship, not just add to our vocabulary.
Our students recite Allah's Names so often within the Qur'an that it becomes easy to pass over them without pausing. Yet the Qur'an itself invites something deeper than recognition, it invites presence.
A Cluster of Names at the Close of Surah Al-Hashr
هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَـٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ ۖ هُوَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ ٱلْمُهَيْمِنُ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْجَبَّارُ ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرُ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُ ٱلْبَارِئُ ٱلْمُصَوِّرُ ۖ لَهُ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
"He is Allāh, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. He is Allāh, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Grantor of Security, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allāh, the Creator, the Producer, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Surah Al-Hashr 59:22-24)
Allah (SWT) describes Himself, in these closing ayat, as the Sovereign, the Pure, the Source of Peace, the Guardian of Faith, the Protector, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner, to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names, and whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him.
Names That Are Never Isolated
These Names are never meant to be studied one by one in isolation. When read together, they teach the heart to hold Allah's perfection without projecting human limitation onto Him, His might is always paired with His wisdom, His nearness with His self-sufficiency.
We encourage our older students, once their memorisation is strong, to slow down and reflect on these Names rather than only recite them. May Allah (SWT) grant our students a heart that recognises Him not only by recitation, but by presence. Ameen.
