A reflection on Surah Al-Hajj 22:37 - why the sacrifice of Hajj was never about the meat or blood, but about the taqwa behind it.
Hajj ends the way it began, with a reminder that outward acts of worship are only ever a vessel for something Allah (SWT) actually values: sincerity of heart.
It Is the Taqwa That Reaches Him
لَن يَنَالَ ٱللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَآؤُهَا وَلَـٰكِن يَنَالُهُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ سَخَّرَهَا لَكُمْ لِتُكَبِّرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَىٰكُمْ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"Their meat will not reach Allāh, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allāh for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good." (Surah Al-Hajj 22:37)
Allah (SWT) says that neither their meat nor their blood reaches Him, but what reaches Him is the taqwa from believers. The sacrifice made during Hajj was never valuable for the animal given; it was valuable for the God-consciousness it represented.
Returning Purified
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever performs Hajj and does not engage in obscenity or wrongdoing returns like the day his mother gave birth to him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1521) The pilgrim who leaves Mina is meant to leave something behind too, not just an animal, but old habits, grudges, and sins.
We hope our students carry this same lesson into their own worship: that Allah (SWT) looks at the sincerity behind an act, whether it is a sacrifice at Hajj or a page memorised at home. May Allah (SWT) accept every sacrifice offered in His name and return every pilgrim purified. Ameen.
