A reflection on Surah Az-Zumar 39:53 - why Allah's (SWT) forgiveness is never a reason for despair, and never an excuse for complacency.
Students carry guilt too, over a missed revision, an unkind word, a broken promise. One of the most healing pairings of Allah's Names addresses exactly this weight.
Do Not Despair of Allah's Mercy
۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
"Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."" (Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)
Allah (SWT) tells His servants who have transgressed against themselves not to despair of His mercy, for Allah forgives all sins, and He is truly the Forgiving, the Merciful. Al-Ghafur and al-Rahim appear together wherever Allah (SWT) addresses sin and repentance, forgiveness removes the barrier, and mercy restores closeness.
Guarding Against Two Extremes
This pairing protects the heart from two opposite mistakes: complacency that abuses Allah's mercy by sinning carelessly, and despair that doubts His forgiveness is real. Allah (SWT) forgives completely, and His mercy is meant to invite change, not to reset negligence.
We remind our students that a mistake, in Hifz or in character, is never the end of the story; sincere repentance always is. May Allah (SWT) forgive our students' shortcomings and draw them closer through His mercy rather than let them despair. Ameen.
