A reflection on Surah Al-Hajj 22:26 - Allah's (SWT) command to Ibrahim (AS) to purify His House for those who worship there.
Before any journey to the Ka'bah could begin, Allah (SWT) first commanded that the House itself be purified. There is a lesson in that order which applies well beyond Hajj.
A House Purified for Worship
وَإِذْ بَوَّأْنَا لِإِبْرَٰهِيمَ مَكَانَ ٱلْبَيْتِ أَن لَّا تُشْرِكْ بِى شَيْـًٔا وَطَهِّرْ بَيْتِىَ لِلطَّآئِفِينَ وَٱلْقَآئِمِينَ وَٱلرُّكَّعِ ٱلسُّجُودِ
"And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate." (Surah Al-Hajj 22:26)
Allah (SWT) reminded Ibrahim (AS) of the site of the House, commanding him not to associate anything with Him and to purify His House for those who circle it, stand for prayer, bow, and prostrate. The physical purification of the Ka'bah mirrors the spiritual purification Allah (SWT) asks of every heart that approaches Him.
Rituals Rooted in Remembrance
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Stoning the Jimari and Sa'i between As-Safa and Al-Marwah are only done for the establishment of Allah's remembrance." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 902) Every action of Hajj, like every page of Hifz, is meant to anchor the heart in remembrance rather than become an empty motion.
We try to teach our students that purity in worship is not just outward correctness; it is a purified intention behind the action. May Allah (SWT) purify our students' hearts as He purified His House for those who worship there. Ameen.
