A reflection on Surah Al-Baqarah 2:203 - the remembrance of Allah (SWT) during the appointed days, and what stoning the Jamarat teaches about resisting temptation.
The stoning of the Jamarat during Hajj is one of the most physical acts of worship in Islam, a direct, visible rejection of temptation. It carries a lesson our students can apply long before they ever stand at Mina.
Remembrance During the Appointed Days
۞ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فِىٓ أَيَّامٍ مَّعْدُودَٰتٍ ۚ فَمَن تَعَجَّلَ فِى يَوْمَيْنِ فَلَآ إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ وَمَن تَأَخَّرَ فَلَآ إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ لِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ ۗ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ
"And remember Allāh during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days - there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] - there is no sin upon him - for him who fears Allāh. And fear Allāh and know that unto Him you will be gathered." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:203)
Allah (SWT) commands the remembrance of Him during the appointed days, and reminds whoever hastens their departure in two days that there is no sin upon them, nor upon one who delays, for the one who fears Allah. The days of Hajj are structured entirely around remembrance, even in their timing.
Seeing Sin as a Mountain, Not a Fly
The Prophet (SAW) said: "The believer sees his sins as a mountain hanging over him, while the hypocrite sees his sins like a fly that passed over his nose." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6308) The pilgrim who stones the Jamarat is practising exactly this seriousness, treating temptation as something to be actively resisted, not casually dismissed.
We encourage our students to bring this same resistance into their own daily choices, refusing to treat small compromises as harmless. May Allah (SWT) grant our students the strength to resist temptation the way the pilgrim resists at Mina. Ameen.
