Surah Al-Mulk now shifts tone, from provision to a pointed warning against the false sense of security that provision can quietly breed.
A Security That Can Vanish Instantly
Allah (SWT) says:
ءَأَمِنتُم مَّن فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ أَن يَخْسِفَ بِكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَمُورُ
"Do you feel secure that He who is above1 would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway?2" (Surah Al-Mulk 67:16)
The ayah references how past nations were destroyed suddenly, despite whatever security they believed they had built. Cities, systems, and structures we may feel safe around today can be overturned instantly by Allah's decree, exactly as they were for those who came before.
Guarding Against Heedlessness
We remind our students, and ourselves, that false security breeds heedlessness. The antidote this ayah points to is gratitude, not anxiety - constantly thanking Allah (SWT) for continued protection rather than assuming it is owed or permanent.
May Allah (SWT) protect us from arrogance and from the heedlessness that false security can breed. Ameen.
