A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:17 - a reminder of human fragility before Allah's (SWT) overwhelming power, and the humility it should produce.
Surah Al-Mulk repeats its warning about false security, this time naming a specific historical consequence - a storm sent upon those who refused every earlier sign.
A Warning Repeated for Emphasis
Allah (SWT) says:
أَمْ أَمِنتُم مَّن فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ أَن يُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ حَاصِبًا ۖ فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ كَيْفَ نَذِيرِ
"Or do you feel secure that He who is above would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning." (Surah Al-Mulk 67:17)
Scholars connect this to the storm of stones sent upon the people of Lut (AS) - a reminder of how fragile human existence is compared to the forces of nature entirely within Allah's control. The ayah's aim is not fear for its own sake, but the humility and awareness that come from remembering it.
Humility as a Daily Habit
We try to nurture in our students a humility that does not need a disaster to teach it - a quiet awareness that every safety they enjoy is a gift, not a guarantee, and that the sins of earlier nations are worth learning from rather than repeating.
May Allah (SWT) keep us humble before His power, and never among those who repeat the arrogance of the nations before us. Ameen.
