Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:2 and the name As-Samad - the One who depends on nothing, while everything depends on Him.
Surah Al-Ikhlas moves from Allah's (SWT) oneness to one of His most striking names, As-Samad, a name our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy often ask us to explain further, because no single English word captures it fully.
Self-Sufficient, Depended Upon by All
ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ
"Allah, the Eternal Refuge." (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:2)
As-Samad means the One who is completely free of need while everything else depends entirely on Him. Allah (SWT) says: "O humanity! It is you who stand in need of Allah, while Allah is the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy." (Surah Fatir 35:15) In a hadith qudsi, Allah (SWT) says: "O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask Me for food, and I shall feed you." (Sahih Muslim 2577)
Where Real Stability Comes From
Everything created is dependent, food, health, teachers, exam results. Only Allah (SWT) is not. We remind our students that the more the heart relies on As-Samad rather than on what is itself dependent, the steadier it becomes through every changing circumstance of the Hifz journey and of life.
May Allah (SWT), As-Samad, be the refuge our students turn to in every need. Ameen.
