A reflection on Surah Al-Fatihah 1:5 - the moment the servant finally speaks, pledging worship and admitting complete dependence on Allah (SWT) in the same breath.
Everything in Surah Al-Fatihah so far has been pure praise. Here, the surah reaches its turning point, where the servant finally speaks about themselves - not as a demand, but as a pledge.
A Vow and a Confession Together
Allah (SWT) says:
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
"It is You we worship and You we ask for help." (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:5)
In Arabic, "You alone" comes first for emphasis - a heart pledging allegiance in a world full of things to love, fear, and seek. But the second half of the ayah protects against a subtle illusion: even worship itself is not achieved by our own strength. We cannot stand in salah, or shed a tear of repentance, without Allah's enabling. We worship Him, and we rely on Him even to be able to worship Him.
An Answered Verse
The Prophet (SAW) taught that Allah (SWT) responds to this very verse in prayer: "When the servant says, 'You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help,' He says: 'This is between Me and My servant, and for My servant is what he asks.'" (Sahih Muslim 395)
This verse corrects two extremes we watch for in our own students - the arrogance of thinking effort alone is enough, and the helplessness of thinking nothing they do matters. The truth sits between: nothing without Allah's help, but with it, any path He asks of them.
May Allah (SWT) accept our worship and grant us His help in every good deed we attempt for His sake. Ameen.
