A reflection on Surah Al-Fatihah 1:6 - why the central request of every salah is not wealth or ease, but guidance to the straight path.
Only after praising Allah, recognising His mercy, and pledging worship does Surah Al-Fatihah finally ask for something specific. What comes first is worth noticing: not wealth, not ease, not status.
The Foundation of Every Success
Allah (SWT) teaches us to say:
ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
"Guide us to the straight path -" (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:6)
As-sirat al-mustaqeem is the clear, balanced road leading to Allah (SWT), walked by the prophets, the truthful, and the righteous. Guidance is not simply information; it has levels. First, Allah (SWT) shows the way through revelation and the signs in creation. Then He opens a heart to love that guidance and walk it - which is what this dua actually asks for: show me the truth clearly, and grant me the steadfastness to live by it.
Notice, too, that we say "guide us," not "guide me" - a reminder that this journey is walked together, through good company, shared learning, and sincere advice.
Asking for It Daily
The Prophet (SAW) taught the dua: "O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2140) Guidance, once given, still needs to be held onto.
Reciting this verse at least seventeen times a day, our students are, without necessarily realising it, asking for the greatest gift a person can receive - a heart that recognises truth, loves it, and moves toward it.
May Allah (SWT) guide us to the straight path, and keep our hearts firm upon it until we meet Him. Ameen.
