Surah Al-Masad 111:4-5 and the hadith of musk and bellows - how the company we keep shapes the heart.
Surah Al-Masad does not mention Abu Lahab alone, it mentions his wife too, who reinforced his opposition rather than softening it. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy we use this ayah to speak with our students about something they often underestimate: how much the people around them shape who they become.
A Warning About Influence
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ
"And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood. Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fibre." (Surah Al-Masad 111:4-5)
The Qur'an is teaching that people rarely move toward guidance, or away from it, entirely alone. Ideas normalise through repeated exposure, attitudes spread through companionship. The Prophet (SAW) described this precisely: "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the seller of musk and the blacksmith's bellows." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5534; Sahih Muslim 2628) One leaves you smelling sweet, the other leaves you covered in soot, whether you meant to be affected or not.
What We Watch For
We pay close attention to the friendships our students build at DSQA, not to control them, but because we know a sincere friend can strengthen a student's faith the same way an unhelpful one can quietly erode it, gradually, without either of them noticing.
May Allah (SWT) surround our students with companions who draw them closer to Him. Ameen.
