Closing our reflection on Surah Al-Masad - why its warning about pride matters, and what follows it in the Qur'an.
Surah Al-Masad is one of the shortest chapters in the Qur'an, and one of its most sobering. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy we close our reflection on it here, by stepping back to see what the whole surah has been building toward.
Not About One Man
سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ
"He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame." (Surah Al-Masad 111:3)
Wealth could not save Abu Lahab. Status could not save him. Family ties could not save him. What destroyed him was a heart unwilling to submit, even after guidance was made clear. This is why believers keep asking, in every prayer, "Guide us to the Straight Path" (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:6), because the Prophet (SAW) reminded us: "Allah has revealed to me that you should humble yourselves." (Sahih Muslim 2865)
Warning, Then Restoration
It is worth noting that Surah Al-Masad is immediately followed by Surah Al-Ikhlas, pure Tawhid, sincere worship of Allah (SWT) alone. One surah warns against the diseases of the heart, pride, arrogance, attachment to this world; the next restores the heart through knowing Allah correctly. We remind our students to read Al-Masad not to judge Abu Lahab, but to protect themselves from becoming like him.
May Allah (SWT) protect the hearts of our students from pride and guide them firmly to the truth. Ameen.
