A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:2 - why Allah (SWT) created death and life to test not the quantity of deeds, but their sincerity and correctness.
Surah Al-Mulk moves quickly from declaring Allah's dominion to explaining why that dominion matters for how we live. Our Hifz students, memorising this surah day by day, are essentially memorising its own explanation of what their effort is for.
Best, Not Most
Allah (SWT) says:
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفُورُ
"[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -" (Surah Al-Mulk 67:2)
Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad explained this phrase as meaning "the most sincere and the most correct" - an action is not accepted by Allah (SWT) until it carries both. Neither lifespan nor wealth determines success; it is sincerity and correctness in deeds that do.
Ihsan Over Volume
This is a principle we try to instil directly in how our students approach memorisation. A page revised with presence and sincerity outweighs ten pages recited with the mind elsewhere. Wishful intentions are not enough on their own; the standard this ayah sets is excellence, ihsan, in what is actually done.
May Allah (SWT) make our deeds, and our students' memorisation, both sincere and correct in His sight. Ameen.
