A reflection on Surah Al-Mulk 67:1, the surah our Hifz students are currently memorising, and the hadith that gives it its name: the surah that intercedes for its reciter.
Among the surahs our Hifz students memorise, few carry a promise quite like this one. The Prophet (SAW) said: "There is a surah in the Qur'an of thirty ayat which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-Mulk." (Abu Dawud 1400; Al-Tirmidhi 2891; Ahmad 7975) That surah is Al-Mulk, and it opens with a declaration worth sitting with.
Dominion in One Hand
Allah (SWT) begins:
تَبَـٰرَكَ ٱلَّذِى بِيَدِهِ ٱلْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
"Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent -" (Surah Al-Mulk 67:1)
Tabaraka comes from barakah, meaning increase and abundance in goodness. Allah (SWT) alone holds all dominion; nothing in creation, from galaxies to a single heartbeat, escapes His knowledge or control. The surah later ends by demonstrating this same power in a different way, tying its opening and closing together deliberately.
Steadiness in What You Cannot Control
For our students, memorising a surah about total dominion while facing their own daily struggles, an ayah not yet secured, a difficult revision session, is itself a lesson. When something is beyond your control, there is comfort in knowing you worship the One who has full control over all matters of His creation.
May Allah (SWT) grant our students ease in memorising this surah, and let it be an intercessor for them, as the Prophet (SAW) promised. Ameen.
