Wasted Time: What Distracts the Heart and Steals Barakah

10 January 2027

A reflection on Surah Al-Hashr 59:19 - how forgetting Allah (SWT) leaves days that feel full but carry no barakah.

A day can be busy and still feel empty. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy we see this in our own students sometimes - hours spent on distraction that leave nothing behind, no growth, no barakah, just time gone.

Forgetting Allah, Forgetting Ourselves

Allah (SWT) warns:

"And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient." (Surah Al-Hashr 59:19)

When Allah (SWT) is forgotten, the self becomes a stranger too - priorities scatter, energy leaks away, and no amount of activity fills the void. This is not primarily about laziness; it is about heedlessness, ghaflah, a heart that has drifted from its purpose even while the body stays busy.

Every Faculty Will Be Questioned

Allah (SWT) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra that our hearing, sight, and hearts will all be asked about (17:36). What we give our attention to shapes who we become, and we will be questioned about that choice.

The Prophet (SAW) said: "From the excellence of a person's Islam is leaving what does not concern him." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2318) A believer conscious of that accounting learns to be selective about where the hours go.

Heart Management, Not Just Time Management

We try to help our students see revision and dhikr as more than tasks to complete - they are what fills the day with barakah rather than heedlessness. Barakah is not found by managing a schedule alone; it is found by managing what the heart is allowed to dwell on.

May Allah (SWT) protect our students from heedlessness, and fill their days with what draws them nearer to Him. Ameen.
