A reflection on Ayatul Kursi and Surah Al-Ikhlas - two short, easily memorised passages the Prophet (SAW) singled out for their exceptional reward.
Among the many surahs and ayat our students memorise at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy, two hold a special place: Ayatul Kursi and Surah Al-Ikhlas. Both are short enough for a young student to master quickly, and both carry a reward the Sunnah describes as extraordinary.
The Greatest Verse in the Qur'an
Ayatul Kursi affirms Allah's (SWT) Oneness, power, and knowledge:
ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ
"Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep..." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and Paradise except death." (al-Mu'jam al-Awsat lil-Tabarani 8068)
The Essence of Tawheed in Four Lines
Surah Al-Ikhlas condenses the belief in Allah's Oneness into a few short lines:
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ
"Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'" (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4)
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas ten times, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise." (al-Mu'jam al-Awsat lil-Tabarani 281)
Small Recitations, Lasting Homes
These are not magical formulas. They are opportunities Allah (SWT) has placed within reach of every believer, young or old, fluent reciter or beginner. We encourage our students to attach Ayatul Kursi to the end of each fardh prayer, and to set aside a few minutes for Surah Al-Ikhlas with reflection, not only recitation.
