A reflection on the ninety-nine names of Allah (SWT) and the hadith promising Paradise to those who learn, believe, and live by them.
Part of what we hope to instil in our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy is not only fluency in recitation but a real closeness to Allah (SWT). One of the most direct paths to that closeness is learning His names.
Invoking Allah by His Names
The Qur'an instructs believers directly:
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا
"And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them." (Surah Al-A'raf 7:180)
The Prophet (SAW) said: "Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one. Whoever learns them will enter Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736)
More Than Memorisation
The word used in the hadith, ahsaha, means more than reciting a list. It means to understand, believe, reflect upon, and apply these names in one's relationship with Allah (SWT). To call upon Ar-Rahman is to affirm His mercy surpasses all. To trust Al-Hakeem is to surrender to His perfect decree. To turn to Al-Ghaffar is to remember that no sin outweighs His forgiveness.
Each name Allah (SWT) reveals about Himself opens a window into how He wants to be known and called upon.
Living by the Names
We encourage our students to choose one name each week, reflect on how it shows itself in their own life, and use it specifically in their du'a. A student who reflects on Al-Wadud, the Most Loving, in a difficult week learns something a list of ninety-nine names recited quickly never teaches.
May Allah (SWT) draw our students nearer to Him through knowledge of His names, and make them among those who learn, believe, and live by them. Ameen.
