A reflection on Surah Al-'Asr and the hadith on health and free time - why every hour we're given is an amanah from Allah (SWT), not simply ours to spend.
Our students at Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy juggle a full school day alongside their Hifz revision, and one of the first lessons we try to instil is that time itself is not neutral. It is a trust (amanah) from Allah (SWT), and how we fill it either draws us closer to Him or lets us drift.
A Warning Sworn by Time Itself
Allah (SWT) swears by time in Surah Al-'Asr:
وَٱلْعَصْرِ ١ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ ٢ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ ٣
"By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." (Surah Al-'Asr 103:1-3)
Loss here is not only about the Hereafter. We feel a smaller version of it whenever a day passes and we cannot say what filled it. Allah (SWT) also reminds us in Surah At-Takathur that "you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure" (102:8) - every comfort, and every free hour, comes with a question attached.
Deceived Into Losing It
The Prophet (SAW) said: "There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6412) The word "deceived" is telling - we rarely notice time slipping until it is gone. Heedlessness rarely announces itself; it simply fills the hours with something other than purpose.
What This Looks Like at DSQA
We encourage our students to treat their revision time the same way - not as a chore squeezed between other things, but as time set aside deliberately for Allah's Book. A single focused quarter-hour of dhikr or Qur'an in place of an aimless one is exactly the trade this surah asks of us.
May Allah (SWT) help our students and their families use the hours they are given with purpose, and make every one of them a witness for them rather than against them. Ameen.
