Surah Al-Ikhlas is four ayat long, yet equal to a third of the Qur'an - why this short surah carries such weight.
Surah Al-Ikhlas is only four ayat long, yet the Prophet (SAW) described it as equal to a third of the entire Qur'an. At Darus Saulieghien Quraan Academy this is one of the first surahs our youngest students memorise, and one of the deepest they will spend a lifetime reflecting on.
Four Ayat, One Foundation
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ
"Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'" (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4)
The Prophet (SAW) explained its weight: "By Him in Whose Hand my life is, this surah is equal to one-third of the Qur'an." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013) Scholars explain the Qur'an broadly covers three themes, belief, law, and stories of the past, and Al-Ikhlas gathers the entirety of correct belief about Allah (SWT) into four short ayat.
Small in Length, Wide in Meaning
We remind our students that a short surah is not a lesser one. Al-Ikhlas holds the foundation everything else in their Hifz rests on, knowing rightly who Allah (SWT) is, before anything else is asked of them.
