Closing our reflection on Surah Al-Fatihah - its final ayah, and the company every believer asks to walk with.
Surah Al-Fatihah closes the way it began, by turning the reciter's attention back to Allah (SWT), this time asking to be placed among a specific company: those He has favoured, not those who earned His anger or went astray. A Path With Company
صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
"The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favour, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray." (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:7)
Scholars explain the favoured as the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. Those who earned anger are those who knew the truth and rejected it, and those astray are those who worshipped without knowledge. The ayah teaches that guidance is not walked alone, it is walked in the company of those who came before, sincere and humble.
What We Hope Our Students Carry
Every surah our students memorise after Al-Fatihah is, in a sense, an answer to this very du'a, more of the straight path being revealed to them, ayah by ayah. We remind them that the goal of Hifz was never memorisation alone. It is walking, with sincerity, the path of those Allah (SWT) has favoured.
May Allah (SWT) place our students, and all of us, firmly among those He has favoured. Ameen.
